Fiber by Central Florida was built to solve a real need in our rural communities — bringing fast, reliable internet access to areas that had long been underserved.

Today:

  • More than 18,600 customers subscribe to Fiber by Central Florida
  • More than 36,000 homes and businesses have access to fiber internet
  • The network has been built to 100% of CFEC members

For members still considering service, Fiber by Central Florida continues to offer:

  • Fast, reliable fiber internet
  • Local customer service
  • Straightforward pricing
  • No contracts

Why CFEC Pursued This Transition

Fiber by Central Florida has been an incredible success story for our cooperative and our communities.

As the network grew, CFEC leadership and the Board of Trustees also had to evaluate the long-term financial responsibilities and risks associated with operating both electric and broadband infrastructure in an increasingly challenging environment.

After careful evaluation, the Board determined that partnering with Conexon represented the best long-term path to support continued growth of the fiber network while also helping protect the cooperative’s long-term financial strength and stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did members approve the sale?

At the 2026 Annual Meeting, CFEC members voted overwhelmingly to authorize the Board of Trustees and General Manager to negotiate and execute a Purchase and Sale Agreement with Conexon for the sale of all fiber-related assets owned by CFEC.

The approved motion specified that the final agreement must include a purchase amount sufficient to retire, at a minimum, 100% of the debt incurred through the fiber project while allowing CFEC to retain all awarded grant funding.

Is the sale finalized?

The membership vote authorized the Board to move forward with completing and finalizing the transaction. Final legal and operational transition work will continue moving forward over the coming months.

Will my rates increase because of this transition?

Conexon understands the importance of affordable, reliable internet service in rural communities and has significant experience serving cooperative territories like ours.

At this time, customers should not expect immediate changes to pricing as a result of the transition. Any future pricing decisions would be communicated clearly and in advance.

Fiber by Central Florida was built around straightforward pricing, reliable service, and no contracts, and both CFEC and Conexon remain committed to serving rural communities well moving forward.

Is CFEC still involved with the fiber network?

Yes. CFEC expects to continue working closely alongside Conexon through at least late 2027 to help ensure a smooth transition process.

CFEC also plans to continue supporting ongoing construction and growth of the network during the transition period

Why did CFEC move forward with this proposal if the fiber network was successful?

The success of the fiber network is actually one of the reasons CFEC leadership believed this transition opportunity was possible.

Fiber by Central Florida successfully solved a major need across rural communities and built a strong, valuable network serving thousands of customers.

At the same time, the cooperative also had to evaluate long-term financial responsibilities, storm-related risks, rising costs, and the challenges associated with operating both electric and broadband infrastructure moving forward.

Will this impact electric service or electric rates?

CFEC’s electric operations continue as normal.

One of the major goals of the transaction structure approved by members was helping strengthen the long-term financial position of the cooperative by addressing debt associated with the fiber project while allowing CFEC to retain awarded grant funding.

CFEC remains committed to continuing to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electric service to members across the area.

Will CFEC employees still be involved?

CFEC and Conexon expect to work closely together throughout the transition period. Additional details regarding long-term operational responsibilities will continue to be evaluated as the process moves forward.

How long will the transition take?

This is expected to be a gradual process that will take place over an extended period of time, with CFEC and Conexon working closely together through late 2027.

Will members continue receiving updates?

Yes.

CFEC and Conexon are committed to clear and proactive communication throughout this process. This page will continue to be updated as additional information, timelines, and details become available.
