Understanding Your CFEC Bill

At Central Florida Electric Cooperative (CFEC), we believe you deserve to know exactly what you’re paying for—and why. Your monthly electric bill reflects the real costs of delivering safe, reliable power to your home or business, with every dollar reinvested into our system or returned to members like you.

Below is a clear breakdown of each part of your bill, including a sample bill help to guide you.

🔌 1. Energy Charge

The Energy Charge is based on how much electricity you use during the month (measured in kilowatt-hours, or kWh), multiplied by the current rate per kWh. This charge helps cover the wholesale cost of generating electricity—which makes up the largest portion of your total bill, about 60%.

Current Residential Rates:

• $0.1060 per kWh for the first 1,000 kWh
• $0.1350 per kWh for usage over 1,000 kWh

Example: If you use 1,200 kWh in a billing cycle:

1,000 kWh × $0.1060 = $106.00

203 kWh × $0.1350 = $27.41

Total Energy Charge = $133.41

🏠 2. Basic Facilities Charge

This is a fixed monthly charge paid by all active members. It ensures that your location is always connected and ready to receive power, even when your energy use is low or zero.

The Basic Facilities Charge covers the cost of:

• Poles, wires, transformers, and meters
• Ongoing system maintenance and upgrades
• Customer service, billing, and administration

These are the foundational costs of keeping the electric grid up and running 24/7.

Facilities Charge:

Single-Phase – $1.25/day

Multi-Phase – $1.70/day

⛈️ 3. Storm Cost Recovery Adjustment

This temporary charge helps CFEC recover unreimbursed costs and interest on loans used to restore power after Hurricanes Idalia, Debby, Helene, and Milton.

Current Rate: $0.00636 per kWh

• If you use 1,000 kWh/month → $6.36
• If you use 500 kWh/month → $3.18

For commercial accounts, this charge is capped at $2,000 per month.

⚡ 4. Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment (WPCA)

The WPCA accounts for changes in fuel costs used to generate electricity. This charge may increase or decrease over time depending on market conditions.

Current Residential Rate (as of June 2026): $0.008 per kWh

Example: 1,000 kWh × $0.008 = $8.00 WPCA charge

🏛️ 5. State and Local Fees

These are mandatory fees required for utility service in your area, which may include state and local taxes or other government-imposed charges.

💡 6. Optional Programs and Add-on Services

• Home Guard Surge Protection – $5.50/month + $20 one-time install fee
• Outdoor Lighting – $60 connection fee (waived if requested when applying for new service). The monthly cost associated with an outdoor light varies by light size:

• Automatic Bank Draft Credit – Save $1.00/month
• Paperless Billing Credit – Save $0.50/month
• Education Round-Up Program – Supports the Central Florida Electric Cooperative Educational Charity, Inc. Participation is voluntary—your electric bill is rounded up to the next dollar, and the spare change funds scholarships. All active CFEC members (except those on levelized billing) can enroll.
