CHIEFLAND, Fla. August 25, 2026 — The Central Florida Electric Cooperative (CFEC) Board of Trustees has approved a reduction to the cooperative’s Storm Cost Recovery Adjustment (SCRA), lowering the charge from $9.36 to $6.36 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh).
The $3 reduction reflects CFEC’s continued progress in recovering costs associated with major storm restoration efforts while balancing the cooperative’s responsibility to maintain financial stability.
CFEC implemented the Storm Cost Recovery Adjustment in February 2025 following significant restoration expenses associated with Hurricanes Idalia, Debby, Helene and Milton. Together, those storms resulted in approximately $47.8 million in costs to restore and rebuild portions of CFEC’s electric system.
“This is a step in the right direction for our members,” said CFEC Board President, Kyle Quincey. “We know every dollar matters, and our goal has always been to reduce this adjustment as soon as it was financially responsible to do so. While we still have storm costs to recover, the progress we have made allows us to provide some relief to our members while continuing to protect the financial strength of the cooperative.”
For a residential member using 1,000 kWh of electricity per month, the Storm Cost Recovery Adjustment will decrease from $9.36 to $6.36, a savings of $3 per month at that usage level. Actual savings will vary based on monthly energy use.
CFEC continues to pursue reimbursement for eligible storm restoration expenses through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM). Reimbursement for major disasters can take years to complete, requiring the cooperative to carry significant storm-related costs while claims move through the federal and state processes.
The SCRA is separate from CFEC’s base electric rates and was established specifically to recover extraordinary costs associated with major storm restoration. CFEC will continue to evaluate the adjustment as additional storm costs are recovered and the cooperative’s financial position allows.
“Our members stepped up with us as we recovered from an unprecedented series of storms,” said CFEC General Manager, Denny George. “Reducing this adjustment is an important milestone, and we will continue working toward the day when it can be removed entirely.”
The new Storm Cost Recovery Adjustment of $6.36 per 1,000 kWh will apply to billing beginning September 1, 2026.
