The membership of Central Florida Electric Cooperative voted overwhelmingly Saturday to grant the CFEC Board of Trustees the authority to move forward with the sale of Fiber by Central Florida and CFEC’s fiber assets to rural fiber broadband leader Conexon.
“This is a historic moment for CFEC and I’m so grateful to our members for seeing the benefits of this sale to our cooperative today and for decades to come,” CFEC CEO Denny George said. “Conexon is the ideal partner for CFEC and we are honored and pleased to forge this agreement.”
This authorization allows the Board to proceed with finalizing a purchase agreement with Conexon that meets key financial conditions, including covering the debt associated with the fiber project and allowing CFEC to retain all grant funding awarded for already completed network construction.
CFEC leadership sincerely thanks its members for their participation and engagement in this important decision. Member involvement is what makes the cooperative model work, and CFEC is grateful for the trust placed in the Board of Trustees and leadership team to guide decisions that support the long-term strength and stability of your cooperative.
The entire CFEC leadership team also wants to again express its gratitude to the membership for trusting the decision to build and deploy the Fiber by Central Florida network. From the beginning, this project has been about so much more than merely providing internet service—it has been about solving a real need in our communities. Because of our collective commitment, thousands of homes and businesses across our service area now have access to reliable, high-speed fiber internet, many for the first time.
It is important for our members and Fiber by Central Florida customers to know that there will be no immediate changes to your service. The network you rely on today will continue to operate as it does now with the same reliable connection and customer service.
This transition will be carried out gradually and thoughtfully. CFEC anticipates working closely with Conexon through late 2027 to ensure a seamless transition of operations. Conexon has been a trusted partner throughout the development of our fiber network and brings extensive experience serving rural communities and electric cooperatives, including our neighbors at Tri-County Electric Cooperative.
During the transition period, CFEC will continue to support the growth of the network in partnership with Conexon, including ongoing fiber construction efforts in Levy County.
