Hurricane Preparation Guide

At Central Florida Electric Cooperative, we work year-round to strengthen our system and prepare for storm season—but it’s just as important that you take steps to prepare your home and family. Hurricanes can cause extended power outages, road closures, and limited access to emergency services. Preparation is the best defense.

Use this guide to prepare before a storm is on the horizon.

Before the Storm: What You Can Do Now

Build or Restock Your Emergency Kit

Include:

  • Flashlights & batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Non-perishable food & water (3+ days supply)
  • Medications
  • First aid supplies
  • Chargers and backup batteries
  • Cash (ATMs may be down)

Update Your Contact Info

Make sure we can reach you with outage alerts and restoration updates. Update your phone number and email through the Member Portal or the Power Partner App.

Have a Backup Power Plan

If you rely on electricity for medical equipment, be sure you have a battery backup or generator, and know how to use it safely.

Review Your Evacuation Plan

Know your zone, routes, and nearby shelters. Practice with your family so everyone is prepared.

Trim Trees & Secure Outdoor Items

Remove dead limbs and secure loose items around your home to prevent damage.

If you or someone in your home depends on electricity for medical equipment or mobility, it’s important to plan ahead. Florida’s Special Needs Registry helps local emergency management agencies identify and assist individuals during disasters.

Please note: Registering does not guarantee priority power restoration. If you depend on electricity, you must have a backup plan or evacuation strategy in place.

Special Needs Registry

During a Storm

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles.
  • Keep the refrigerator closed as much as possible.
  • Avoid downed power lines and flooded areas—they could be energized.
  • Use generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from your home.

After the Storm

  • Report outages using the Power Partner App, Member Portal, or by calling us.
  • Avoid touching downed lines or any water near them.
  • If your home has storm damage, ensure it’s safe before using electricity.
  • Follow updates on CFEC’s Facebook page and website.
