What to Do if Your Electric Equipment is Damaged in a Storm
After a storm, we want to help you understand the steps to take if the storm has damaged the electric equipment on your property. While CFEC is responsible for maintaining certain electrical infrastructure, some equipment is owned by you, the member, and it is your responsibility to have it repaired before we can fully restore your power.
What Belongs to CFEC vs. What Belongs to You
To clarify, CFEC owns and maintains the service lines leading to your home, but certain equipment on your property, such as the meter pole and meter can, is your responsibility as the homeowner. Please refer to the graphic accompanying this article to visually understand the division between CFEC-owned and member-owned equipment.
Steps to Follow if Your Electric Equipment is Damaged
- Report the Damage to CFEC
If your meter pole or meter can has been damaged, the first step is to report the damage to us at (800) 227-1302. We will send crews to safely disconnect the meter and make note of the damages. - Contact a Licensed Electrician
The meter pole and meter can are part of your personal property, and you will need to hire a licensed electrician to repair or replace the damaged equipment. - Get Inspected and Approved by the County
Once your electrician has completed the necessary repairs, your new equipment will need to be inspected and approved by your county’s inspection authority before CFEC can reinstall the meter and restore your service.
Storm Surge Damage
Residents in coastal areas should be aware that electric equipment may have been exposed to seawater, potentially leading to corrosion and future voltage issues. It’s crucial to have your equipment inspected and replaced if necessary, even if power has already been restored.
For questions, contact CFEC at (800) 227-1302. We are here to assist you through this process.
